Ashleigh Harper, Swansea Trotter and former Cross Country Captain of Swansea University Athletics & XC team, secured 1st place in the 360 Marina 5k 2014 with Verity Ockenden claiming the win in the women’s race in an impressive time of 17:59.
Ashleigh retained his title from last year, recording a time of 16:28, holding off a strong challenge from Swansea Universities, Sander Vaher. In the annual Men’s team competition between the Swansea Trotters and Swansea University, the “Sea Pigs” recorded their first victory over the University team in emphatic style with Lewis Banner (4th), Tom Bowerman (5th) and a very noteworthy performance from James Greene (10th), completing the scoring team.
Verity Ockenden was the clear victor in the women’s race smashing her personal best by 1 minute 32 seconds. She was followed by current Swansea University Athletics & XC Club President, Emily Relton, and fresher, Rebecca Miller in 2nd and 3rd respectively.
The event this year raised slightly over £460 for the current Swansea University Athletics & XC Club/Triathlon team and leading heart charity, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) – in honour of club member Timothy Butt who survived a sudden cardiac arrest last year. We also received £40 worth of donations directly to CRY UK on the day, including a £5 donation from a couple on the beach whom had no involvement in the event yet stopped our very own Trotter, Michelle Grey on her warm down in order to donate. Never underestimate the kindness of strangers! Thank you for all your kind donations.
And finally, thank you to all the volunteers who helped out on the day and our sponsors Block Head Energy Gum, as without both of them, the event would not be able to happen.
